Ever since 1988, National Homebrew Day has been celebrated on the first Saturday in May, as decreed by Congress. To celebrate, this Friday, May 5th, we’re giving away some of our yeast for FREE to anyone who wants to participate in this day.
Here’s how to participate:
Come to the Public House with a sanitized plastic container on Friday between 4pm and 8pm, and we’ll fill it up with our house ale yeast (while supplies last). This yeast works best for clean-fermenting American ale styles – but of course, homebrewing is about experimentation, so try whatever you like and see what comes out of it!
Some helpful hints:
- With yeast, you want to be careful about sanitation, so make sure that your vessel is completely sanitized to prevent any other bacteria from sneaking into your brew (Iodophor or Star-San are good options, but boiling water will work too).
- This yeast works best at room temperature (mid 60s to low 70s), but keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to brew.
- Make sure you don’t use a glass container to house your yeast – since it’s actively fermenting, carbon dioxide will build up in the container and eventually burst. If it starts to bulge out, open the top and leak some of the pressure off.
- The yeast came off of an actively fermenting IPA, so no need for a starter – it’s already filled with billions of happy healthy yeast!
Good luck, and happy brewing!
