6,000 Cigarette Butts

Summer has hardly just begun – and let’s be honest, in LA, it never really ends. But here at Angel City, we feel like we’ve accomplished so much already. That’s because all season long, we’ve been partnering with the Surfrider Foundation all throughout SoCal to help in their mission “…dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network”.

Through cleanups at 6 different beaches – and one LA river – we’ve helped them cleanse the sand and prevent hundreds of pieces of plastic from ending up in the water. With their support and yours, we’ve collected:

  • Over 1200 pounds of trash!
  • Over 6000 cigarette butts
  • Nearly 500 straws
  • Innumerable microplastics
  • And 1 license plate! (Which was delivered to the CA DMV, of course).

And most importantly, we’ve donated over $13,000 to six different local Surfrider chapters, which means they’ll be able to continue this important work into the future!

But the best part of all? Everyone who cleaned up the beach got one of these badass t-shirts, which believe it or not is made from eight reclaimed plastic bottles – and are still comfy as hell!

If you missed out on the fun, don’t worry – we will be celebrating the program’s finale with a Surfrider Foundation Art Exhibition – “From Land to Sea” – opening on 8/16 from 6-10PM. The Gallery will feature ocean-inspired works from Marissa Quinn, Todd Weaver and Ethan Estess, and more. The event is free to attend, and proceeds from the art sold will go toward supporting Surfrider. For more information on the event, please visit the Facebook event page here.

Our staff also took part in a Plastic Free Challenge… it didn’t go well… but you can learn from them on our blog!
