The California Common is a unique amber lager that originated in the American West and perfected in San Francisco just after the start of the Gold Rush. Out of necessity for the influx of settlers trying to make it rich, who also wanted beer, was born the Common as an improvised way of brewing without refrigeration. Lager yeast was used but fermented at warmer temperatures than what is preferred so the beer started to take on interesting ale-like qualities. The hop profile comes across as woody and minty while the flavor has notes of a caramel maltiness but balanced by a slightly sharp rustic bitterness.
